If your toilet didn’t flush the first or second then STOP you have a blocked toilet. Chances are if you continue trying to flush the toilet you will only make it worse and could end up with the toilet water flooding over onto the bathroom floor.

To protect yourself from any germs when toilet unblocking you want to make sure you wear some protective clothing like long rubber gloves, goggles or glasses. Its also a good idea to put down some newspaper or plastic bags around the toilet in case of flooding, only use towels if you don’t mind them getting ruined.

If you do know what is blocking the toilet, for example if you know a toy or bottle of soap accidentally fell in, then you can try reaching in, whilst wearing gloves, to try and pull it out. However it is is out of reach then call Metro Rod who can help you further.

The first thing you can try before using the home remedies is the trusty toilet plunger. Place the plunger so it is covering the the hole completely and gently begin to push and pull to to loosen the blockage. Once the blockage is loose, pull it out and place it in a strong bag with no holes. With the blockage removed your toilet should flush normally, you can check by putting a small amount of toilet paper in the toilet and flushing it.

There are a couple of Home Remedies you can try yourself to dislodge the blockage. Before starting, you will need to make sure the toilet bowl is half full of water, so either take some out with a jug or add some hot water in. You are then ready to try either of our 2 home remedies.

    1. Pour a cup of baking soda into the toilet, followed by 1 cup vinegar, pouring slowly to ensure the reaction doesn’t overflow, wait for about 10 minutes. Then pour boiling water down the toilet. The reaction from the baking soda and vinegar helps loosen what is clogging the toilet. You should see the water level begin to go down, but if you have a particularly stubborn blockage you may need to try again and wait for a longer time before flushing.
    2. The chemical way - pour a toilet unblocker as per the manufacturing instructions down the toilet, followed by boiling water to help push it along.
