To help your Christmas and New Year go as well as possible we are staying open and available 24/7 so we can tend to your drains.

Whilst this Christmas may be looking to be a lot different compared to previous years we want to ensure you have a great Christmas. A lot can go wrong with drains, especially in winter due to the drop in temperatures, more rain and snow and an increase in usage. With our helplines always open and an engineer on call we can help you and your drains no matter the day or time.

Poor working drains could really put a stop to the festivities, so we want to help by pointing out a few of the common problems we see around this time of year and some things you can do to prevent them getting out of control and ruining your day.

Food at Christmas

A Christmas highlight for many is the food that comes with Christmas – the turkey and all the trimmings. But these foods tend to produce a lot of fat and grease which can become a real problem for our drains.  When it comes to the liquid fat and grease you should wait for it solidify and then scrape it into the bin to prevent the blocked drains. In addition by careful not to rinse any food down the sink as this can also lead to blockages. You can use sink catchers to prevent pieces of food being washed down the sink and then dispose of them.

Freezing Pipes

As the temperatures drop this Christmas and into the New Year, the water in your pipes are at risk of freezing. When water freezes it will expand which puts pressure on the pipes and can cause them to crack and rupture. When the ice melts it will start leaking out from the cracks, and in serious cases when the pipes are located inside the property, it could cause structural damage which can be very costly to repair.

Over Flowing Drains and Gutters

It is important you keep your drains and gutters clear this winter. As the weather gets worse, they can become blocked due to the fallen debris that collects in them. Then with the increase in rain and possible snow it will put stress on the drains and could prevent the water from draining away. This may result in localised flooding if you’re not careful. Metro Rod Bournemouth offer both drain unblocking and Gutter VACs to keep your drains clear and flowing. You can find out more on how to prevent flooding here.
