Inmates at a prison in Shropshire have been blocking their drains by flushing egg shells down their toilets.
The inmates had been making protein shakes in their cells and then flushing the shells down the toilet resulting in them collecting in the drains and causing a blockage at the prison.Severn Trent noticed that there was extra waste at their treatment system close to the prison and ECAS monitored the prison and found that inmates were flushing meals and egg shells down their cell drains.
The prison has since put in place a new system that means that the prison staff now collect and remove all food waste to prevent any chance of further drain blockages.
We regularly encourage and advise via our Twitter and Facebook only to flush the 3 P's (Poo, Pee and Paper), as anything else that gets flushed down the toilet or drain usually results in damaged or blocked drains.
