Metro Rod Deals With Drain Problems Due To Bad Weather | Liverpool Runcorn Warrington St Helens Drains

You may have noticed that the weather has turned a little colder over the past few days and with temperatures set to remain low it may be worth noting that Metro Rod can help with any drain problems that the cold weather can bring.

Winter inevitably leads to frost, snow and cold weather - all which can look quite beautiful but it can cause  damage to your drains and in some cases your property. During the winter pipes and drainage systems are all susceptible to freezing and then damage - so it's important to keep your drain systems well maintained to ensure no faults occur - especially at inconvenient times!

Frosty Winter Tree
Metro Rod are here to provide service and advice to ensure that you avoid common winter drainage problems, so if you're a home or business owner in the Liverpool, Warrington, St Helens, Skelmersdale, Runcorn and Widnes areas you may want to read on to find out about problems that you may have with your drains in this weather and possible solutions.

Drain Inspection

Autumn and winter bring leaves, rain, frost and (hopefully!) snow. It's also the time of year where you're most likely to find leaves, twigs, branches and other debris blocking your external drains. Uncleared blockages can result in blockages to drainage systems and can result in blockages and flooding in or outside your home or business. Please consider;

  • Checking that your pipes, gutters, downpipes and drains are not blocked; clearing leaves, twigs and visible debris.  If required Metro Rod have the innovative Metro Vac system which can clear gutters from ground level, click here to find out more!
  • Look out for signs of frozen pipes, if water seems slow flowing or is backing up in the drain it maybe a sign of a frozen blockage - Metro Rod can help with this, call us on 0151 909 2807 for advice.  Our expert engineers can carry out a drain inspectionand ensure you drains are free from blockages this winter.
  • Insulate Vulnerable Pipework (internally and externally).  Ensure any pipes that are exposed to the elements are insulated properly - by doing this you can minimise the likelihood of blocked, frozen or burst pipes.
  • Avoid Drain Blockages.  We should never dispose of fats or oils down into sinks and drains.  In winter this is even more important. As the fats and oils cool it can block or coat the inside of the pipes, meaning the pipe has decreased capacity and increasing the likelihood of a blockage. Dispose of fats and oils properly, either let them cool and dispose of them into a bin or if your council has an oil collection service please use this.
  • Leaks and Drips.  If water is dripping it is more likely to freeze (due to it being a smaller amount, smaller amounts obviously freeze faster!).  Metro Rod can deal with all aspects of drain problems and emergency plumbing so keep our details to hand in case of any problems.

Gutters

As mentioned above full gutters and rain can lead to drainage problems and also structural problems on homes and sites.  Metro Rod Liverpool were recently called to a site that had full gutters full of leaves and moss and whenever it rained the gutter was flooding, leading to puddles forming on the ground and the puddles were freezing - obviously a major hazard for members of the public.  It is important to ensure that gutters are kept clean and clear and we can assist with this, as above.

Drain problems are never convenient or wanted, but problems such as these often seem worse and are even more inconvenient in the cold weather.  If you have any drain problems or requirements or need any advice on how to deal with any potential problems please don't hesitate to contact us at Metro Rod direct.
