Bournemouth is a large coastal resort town on the south coast of England to the east of the World Heritage Site of the Jurassic Coast. According to the 2011 census, the town has a population of 183,491 making it the largest settlement in Dorset and with Poole to the west and Christchurch to the East this forms part of the South East conurbation with a population of over 465,000. That's a lot of blocked drains, toilets, sinks and gutters.
Before Bournemouth was founded in 1810 by Lewis Tregonwell, the area was a deserted heathland that was only visited by fishermen and smugglers. Originally classified as a health resort, appearing in The Spas of England in 1841. It was the arrival of the railway that saw a massive growth in seaside and summer visitors to the town, and Bournemouth became a recognised town in 1870.
With the many visitors to Bournemouth tourism is extremely important to the local economy. In 2011, domestic and overseas visitors made more than 5.6 million trips to the town and spent over £460 million between them. Metro Rod work hard with the many restaurants, hotels, bars, clubs and B&B's to keep their drains clear along with toilets and in particular grease traps, and Metro Rod vans and tankers are a regularly on site to deal with drainage emergencies.
Alongside tourism, Bournemouth is also home to some large businesses in the financial sector with JP Morgan, Nationwide Building Society and Liverpool Victoria Head Office amongst them, along with the thousands of small tech and creative businesses that keep popping up.
Another growth area for the town is the University which has gone from strength to strength seeing increasing numbers of students. This in turn has required the construction of university buildings and accommodation blocks and Metro Rod has carried out many CCTV Surveys before and after completion of buildings along with dealing with the inevitable emergency blockages that can occur.
With the promotion of AFC Bournemouth (known as the Cherries) in to the Football Premier league, weekends see an influx of fans from all over the country who arrive by train and road as well as using the expanding Bournemouth International Airport.
One of the biggest events is the Bournemouth Air Festival which takes place over 4 days each year normally over the last weekend of August.
