How To Deal With A Water Leak In Your Home

A water leak can be caused by several different factors such as cracked pipes, leaking radiators or blockages. They can be a very small water leak but can have a huge impact on your property as the pipes are located throughout your walls, ceilings and under floorboards so if one leaks/bursts, it can create a lot of damage.

What causes a water leak?

A Faulty Seal

If the seal around your bath/sink/shower has worn away or become broken, water can leak and will cause mould on your floor or behind your bath which could result in you needing a whole new bathroom.

Leaking Toilet

If you have a water leak from your leaking toilet, then it could create an unhealthy mould to grow in your bathroom which is difficult to remove. However, if the water leak is internal, it will go back down the drain, but you won’t notice (until you receive your increased water bill).

Leaking Sink

The pipes under your sink are usually hidden away in a cupboard (out of sight, out of mind) however this often means you won’t notice it leaking. Once you notice that a water leak under your sink, it may have already damaged your cabinets.

Washing Machine Hoses

Our washing machine hoses hold a large amount of water (the same as a FULL bath tub) so if the pipes leak or burst, it can cause a huge disaster.

Water Pipes

If you have a water leak from the general water pipes, it can be the most destructive plumbing disaster ever. The water pipes are all over the house including ceilings, floors and walls so if you notice any sign of your water pipes leaking, call us ASAP on 0808 208 2655.

How to check for a water leak

There are several different indications that you have a water leak, including:

  • Unidentified puddles of water
  • Low water pressure / slow running water
  • Dripping noises
  • Damp/Bubbled walls
  • Discolouration on ceilings, walls or floors
  • Constant wet patches on driveway

Top Tips to Prevent/Resolve A Water Leak

  • Always be aware of where your stop tap/stop cock is so you can switch off the water supply if you notice a water leak.
  • Remove hoses from outdoor taps during the colder months to prevent a cracked pipe.
  • Add pipe insulation to cold parts of your house such as in the basement or in the garage. Pipe insulation is a very cheap solution in comparison to potentially having to replace pipes.
  • Don’t misuse any exposed pipes by hanging anything on them such as clothing and picture frames as it can loosen the joins leading to a potential water leak.
  • If you notice even the smallest leak, report it to us straight away! A small water leak can result in a lot of damage to your property.
