Weather Watch!

Here at Metro Rod Norwich Towers we keep on hearing rumours that there could be snow on the way and that towards the end of the month we can expect to see 3.9cm fall in one day according to https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/weather/norfolk-weather-snow-january-2019-1-5850503.

Nobody around here can so much as shiver without recalling last years 'Beast From The East' and the disruption that it caused, the farmers around here became our hero's keeping roads passable for those who absolutely had to travel. On Sunday 20th January one of our Metro Rod Norwich engineers was out in Great Yarmouth and his van registered a temperature of -0.6c. Ice, snow, freezing fog and all potentially just around the corner so here is our snow survival hints and tips guide for Norfolk.

Preparing for the cold weather:-

  • Stock up with basics for the next couple of days but try not to stock pile too much food.
  • Check your heating is working effectively and efficiently. It may be wise to leave your heating on a lower setting but all the time.
  • Check your pipework for leaks, Metro Rod Norwich can assist if something isn't quite right. https://www.metrorod.co.uk/services/drain-repair/
  • How's the water pressure in your house? A water pressure test can help determine and locate a leak.
  • Check your washers, we can help if you have a dripping, leaky tap or a tap that isn't working at all. https://www.metrorod.co.uk/services/metro-plumb/
  • Heat your home not your walls - either invest in radiator reflective panels  or find out about wrapping tin foil around cardboard to reflect the heat back into the room - click on this link for further details. http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/home-insulation/insulating-tanks-pipes-and-radiators
  • Draught proof your home.
  • Get your boiler serviced.
  • Bleed the radiators.
  • Take care of your pipes, cover your stop tap with a insulating jacket if possible. Apply lagging to pipes and water tanks for example.
  • Clear gutters and ensure that water can drain freely away. https://www.metrorod.co.uk/services/gutter-cleaning/

During the cold weather, remember these tips to stay warm:-

  • Cover up with plenty of layers.
  • Close the curtains, and if you are in the market for new ones, check out 'thermal curtains' for better heat efficiency.
  • Once you have finished using the oven to cook, leave the over door open for a while (if it is safe to do so), this way the heat from the over will add to heating your house.
  • Pop an extra layer down underfoot, roll out another rug to provide another layer of insulation.
  • Check on your elderly or vulnerable neighbours.
  • Keep the radio on for updates such as travel updates which may affect your commute.
  • Keep mobile phones fully charged.
