Toilet unblocking is often a case of urgency to prevent flooding and bad smells and this will effect whether you try unblocking it yourself or calling one of our professionals from Metro Rod.

If you want to try it yourself follow these steps:

If your toilet didn’t flush the first or second time, then STOP you have a blocked toilet. If you continue to flush a blocked toilet, majority of the time this will make it worse and you could end up filling the toilet bowl with dirty water which can then spill over onto the bathroom floor. 

Protect yourself

When dealing with a blocked toilet you want to make sure you are protected from any germs so its best to wear some protective gear like long rubber gloves and protective goggles or glasses. Its also a good idea to lay down some newspaper or plastic bags to prevent the floor being soaked, best to not use towels as they might get ruined. 

If you do know what is blocking the toilet, for example if a toy, toiletry bottle or something else accidentally fell in then you can, wearing gloves, reach in and try to pull it out. However if it is out of reach, call Metro Rod.

Home Remedies 

Before starting with the home remedies you will need the toilet bowl to be half full of water, so either take some out with a jug or pour some hot water in. Here are two remedies you can try when toilet unblocking

1. 1. Pour a cup of baking soda into the toilet, followed by 1 cup vinegar, pouring slowly to ensure the reaction doesn’t overflow, wait for about 10 minutes. Then pour boiling water down the toilet. The reaction from the baking soda and vinegar helps loosen what is clogging the toilet. You should see the water level begin to go down, but if you have a particularly stubborn blockage you may need to wait for a longer time before flushing.
   2. The chemical way - pour a toilet unblocker as per the manufacturing instructions down the toilet, followed by boiling water to help push it along.

If the home remedies don’t work you can always try using a toilet plunger. Place the plunger so it is covering the the hole completely and gently begin to push and pull to to loosen the blockage. Once the blockage is loose, pull it out and place it in a strong bag with no holes. With the blockage removed your toilet should flush normally, you can check by putting a small amount of toilet paper in the toilet and flushing it.
