If you ever have a blocked drain we know you’ll want to get it sorted as quick as possible, so here are some of Metro Rod Mid Wales’ tips to solve a blocked drain.

When you first notice a blocked drain you’re going to want to prevent any flooding and horrid odours from coming out. This means cracking on with the unblocking attempts. There are a couple of things you can always try before calling out one of our engineers.

    1. Start by pouring boiling water down the problem drain. Then pour a cup of baking soda, followed by 1 cup water and 1 cup vinegar, cover the drain with the plug and wait for between 5-10 minutes. Then pour boiling water down the drain again. The reaction from the baking soda and vinegar helps loosen what is clogging the drain, and then the boiling water helps to push it out.
    2. The chemical way - pour a sink or drain unblocker as per the manufacturing instructions down the drain, followed by boiling water to help push it along.
    3. For a blocked toilet you can try using a plunger by placing it over the hole and gently pushing and pulling to try and loosen whatever is blocking the toilet. Should you mange to move the blockage, you can, whilst wearing glove, remove it from the toilet and put it in a plastic bag (with no holes) and dispose of correctly.
    4. If you suspect there is a ‘fatberg’ (solidified mass of fat) blocking your drains then the best thing you can try is pouring boiling water down the drain to try and loosen the mass and flush it out.

If these methods don’t work then you don’t need to worry as Metro Rod Mid Wales are on call 24/7 to respond to any drainage emergency. We offer a couple of different options to unblock drains, including high-pressure jetting and electro-mechanical cleaning.

  • High-pressure water jetting works by propelling directly pressurised water towards the blockage within the confines of the drain. The force of the water breaks up the blockage into small pieces which can be flushed out of the drain.
  • Electro-mechanical cleaning is the process of using a motorised tool to rotate a cable or spring which is stored inside the tool. The engineer feeds the cable into the blocked drain and uses the tool to rotate the cable within the pipe. This effectively breaks up the large mass so that it can be easily pushed through the pipe or drain.
