HELP YOUR DRAINS IN THE HOT WEATHER – METRO ROD COVENTRY

The sun is finally out and it looks like it is here to stay which means you should be aware of how this weather can affect your drains.

Unblock Drains

Many people will automatically associate drainage problems with the excessive rain and fallen leaves during autumn and winter, but the sun can also bring with it some problems. It is fair to say that we have seen our fair share of rain this year and now the sun it out you’ll be looking to make the most of it. The last thing you want to deal with in the heat while you try and have nice BBQ is a damaged and broken drain. We are going to explain some of the common problems that can arise during summer so you can be on the look out and catch them early on.

  1. Hot plastic pipes

A lot of our pipes are made out of plastic, and these pipes that are outside will be subjected to the summer heat which can cause them to fracture and crack. The UV light from the sun can cause the plastic to become brittle, and then the heat causes them to crack.

It’s not just the plastic pipes above ground that can become damaged in the sun. During extreme hot and dry spells the ground becomes hard and dry, which fractures and then puts pressure on the pipes underneath causing them strain which can lead to cracks.

  1. Leaky pipes in the summer

Leaking pipes are a common problem when they have undergone stress, and a reason for this added stress in the summer may be because you are using the hosepipe, sprinklers and filling up pools more than at other times of the year.

To avoid leaking pipes try using your mains water as little as possible, instead you can use a water butt which stores rainwater for you and will help you save money on the water bill.

3.   Plant Roots

The hot weather is great for plants, but underground the roots that support the growing plant can start to make their way into small cracks in your pipes which will only worsen as the roots get bigger. The roots cause blockages and prevent the flow of water through your pipes, if you find you have a blocked drain that will not go away, a root may be the cause. Metro Rod will be able to determine this for you and then work out the best way to remove it and repair your drain.
