New Approach to Sustainable Drainage Set to Reduce Flood Risk and Clean Up Rivers

With the focus on creating a brighter and greener future, sustainable drainage is set to protect our environment.

With the focus on creating a sustainable drainage system, the government’s review (published on the 10th of January) is set to reduce the risk of surface water flooding and pollution. We should expect to see improvements in the resilience of our drainage and sewer infrastructure.

Environment Minister Rebecca Pow said: “Our traditional drainage and sewerage systems are under increasing pressure from the effects of climate change, urbanisation and a growing population.”

This new approach will help ensure that sustainable drainage systems are designed to reduce the impact of rainfall on new developments and reduce the overall amount of water in the sewers and storm overflow discharges. The recommendation is to make sustainable drainage systems mandatory for new developments in England. We can already expect the implementation of this new approach in 2024.

However, not only the new developments will reap the benefits. The reduced risk of flooding and water pollution will also greatly impact our environment!
