Autumn and winter is a time to stay inside and cozy, but if you aren’t prepared for the cold and wet weather you may find yourself with some disruptive problems.

Now is the time to prepare your home and drains for the bad weather and the affects it can have. Metro Rod Bristol would like to give you some pointers on the things you can do to prepare for the common problems we see occurring over autumn and winter.

Clear drains and gutters

Maintaining your drains and gutters is something you cant get around doing if you want to see them fully functioning over winter. You should be checking for any cracks or leaks, build up of leaves and other debris that may cause a blockage and stop the water draining away. With the heavy rain and potential snowfall you want to make sure your drains and gutters are clear to take away all this extra water, as you may experience greater leaks and damage if it cannot.

We recommend clearing your drains and raking up leaves regularly so that you make the job a little easier for yourself. By keeping them away from any drain grates you will hopefully prevent them clogging up and stopping the draining of water.

Protect your pipes

A small investment in some lagging or insulation in the colder months can really pay off when it comes to your pipes. Lagging is just the insulation tubes made of foam which can help prevent your pipes from freezing up. It’s a good idea because if your pipes freeze with water inside, the water will expand as it turns to ice potentially rupturing your pipes which can then cause them to leak as the ice thaws. The insulation will also help make your heating more efficient as it will reduce heat loss.

Repair leaks

After summer you’ll want to inspect your pipes and check for leaks that may have occurred. Cracks and fractures can be made worse with the extra rainfall and snow, especially in the cold. Metro Rod Bristol offer a range of good quality drain repairs, so if you do find a leak somewhere then don’t hesitate to get in contact with us today.

We hope these few pieces of advice will keep your drains running smoothly throughout the cold weather of autumn and winter. If you do find yourself with any problems regarding the drainage system then we are happy to help.
