Every autumn brings with it some challenges for our drains, so to help yours keep running this winter, follow these simple tips.

Gutter cleaning

We rely on our drains all year round to be fully functioning and this doesn’t stop in autumn and winter. But the bad weather we see every year puts added pressure on our drains and if they aren’t properly maintained then we can start to see problems arising. With falling leaves and debris clogging up drains, to the heavy rainfall, there are a number of things you can do to keep your drains in top working order.

#1 Clear your drains

Every week or so if you can pull any leaves that have gone into your drains out then you will significantly help reduce the risk of it becoming blocked. Alternatively, you can buy some drain guards which is prevent leaves and other debris from falling into your drains whilst still allowing water to go through. With drain guards you will have to clear them from time to time as otherwise the leaves will build up on top and still stop water from entering the drain. If you don’t do this then you may end up with very blocked drains due to all the debris that has made its way inside.

#2 Gutter VACs

The other problem you might have with the soggy leaves is that they will clog up your gutters on your home. Whilst it’s a simple fix of removing them it can become dangerous having to use a ladder and do it yourself. This is why Metro Rod Northampton offer Gutter VACs which will remove all the leaves blocking your gutters. We are able to carry this out safely and without a ladder so you don’t have to worry about it yourself. We also use a camera attached the pole which allows the engineer to remove all the leaves ensuring you are left with completely clean and leaf free gutters.

#3 Freeze Thawing

Another problem you should be anticipating and preparing for is the potential that your pipes might freeze. When pipes and the water inside freeze as well, the ice will expand in the pipes and cause fractures. The problem also comes when it starts to thaw out as the melting ice will start to leak out of these new cracks and fractures. You should consider having the heating on regularly to keep them from freezing as well as buying foam insulation for the pipes you can reach. Prevention is far better than waiting and having to react to a problem as this will most likely be harder and more costly.
