TOP TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR DRAINS CLEAR – DRAINAGE DOS & DONT’S

At Metro Rod Birmingham we believe in trying our best to educate others on how to take of their drains, keeping your drains clear and following these top tips can help prevent a blockage, so here are some of our top tips on drainage ‘dos and don’ts’…..

DO....

  1. Use your drains and taps regularly!

It can be a common mistake for people to not use their drainage systems for weeks during the winter period – perhaps while away visiting family or warmer places. It is crucial when leaving home/any buildings that there is regular usage – this is one cause of blocked drains

  1. Be vigilant and aware!

It is crucial to always keep an eye on your drainage system and ensure there is no debris or risk of debris blocking drains, if it is unsafe for you to do then please do call Metro Rod and we can assist in checking your drains and clearing drains. Beware of any small leaks, during the cold weather these small drips can become a big problem.

  1. Regularly clear drains you access!

Outside drains can be accessed and should be cleared on a regular basis to avoid build up of debris, particularly during autumn and winter months. Inside drains such as sinks and toilets can be regularly maintained by weekly declogging of shower drains and pouring boiling water down drains – this can help push out any build up.

DON’T!

  1. Don’t let it freeze!Of course during the lower temperatures there is risk of anything stuck in your pipes freezing – make sure you are careful in what you pour down your drains
  2. Put anything down there!Pouring fat and grease down drains is a common cause of blocked drains so please do be careful in what you are putting down your drains. Other common causes are wet wipes, sanitary products, food waste, nappies and more – these are all examples of items that are not made to go through the drain system and can cause a serious blockage.
  3. Use corrosive chemicals!

It is always tempting to try to sort out any issues at home yourself, this can result in a quick google of what products may help get rid of build ups. However, some of these corrosive chemical products can cause serious damage to drains and cannot always be trusted. Stick to the natural remedies such as boiling water and vinegar mixed with baking soda – if this fails then give us a call and when we will get our engineers out straight away!

If in doubt about any of our top dos and don’ts please do give us a call and we will be on hand to advise whether we believe our assistance is needed with any drainage issues.
