It is important to remember to only ever flush the 3 Ps down the toilet - Poo, Pee and Paper. You may be tempted to flush things like wet wipes, cotton wool and sanitary products down the toilet, but these are insoluble and will end up clogging your toilet.
The Water Research Centre has opened a testing facility so they can test the flush-ability of wet wipes and ensure they meet the standards to be awarded the ‘Fine to Flush’ certification. So while it is probably safer to always bin your wet wipes, these are the ones that can be flushed.
We find that people often rinse food off their plates and down the sink, but this can lead to blockages as the food will catch on the sides of the pipes and clog them up. This is especially true for carbs like pasta, bread and rice which soak up water and expand.
Washing fat, oil and grease down the sink may not seem like a bad choice as its often liquid when we do, but fats, oil and grease will solidify as it cools which can create big masses in your pipes. These blockages can start to smell as well as cause general inconvenience.
To prevent this from happening always scrape food off into the bin and allow fats, oil and grease to cool and solidify before binning it.
