We rely on our drains to be fully functioning and working on a daily basis, otherwise we can find our day completely disrupted. No one wants to have friends over, or be heading out for the day only to find your toilet water rising or unable to flush. To help minimise the possibility of this happening we suggest you follow our simple drain care tips to keep your drains flowing smoothly.

Tip #1 - Only Flush the 3 Ps

To prevent our toilets from unnecessary obstructions you should only ever flush the 3 Ps, that is Poo, Pee and toilet Paper. A lot of other substances that we find get flushed, such as wet wipes, cotton wool, sanitary products and kitchen paper can be very harmful to your flushing toilets. These products are non-biodegradable and so wont disintegrate in water, therefore they can then get caught on the uneven walls on the pipes and stay there collecting more debris and building up a mass causing a blockage. So while you may think they can flush fine and disappear they tend to stay in your pipes and eventually cause you problems.

There have been quite a few reports of wet wipe’s stating they are flushable, however it has been shown that a lot of the time these wet wipes do not meet the Water Research Centre’s criteria to be deemed as flushable. As a result the WRC has opened a new testing facility which is now the only place for wet wipes to be tested and then awarded the right to display the ‘fine to flush’ logo.

Tip #2 - Do Not Rinse Food Down The Sink

After cooking and eating people do tend to rinse and wash food down the sink, but this is known to cause blockages. A lot of food will absorb the water around it, e.g. rice, pasta, bread, and this causes it to get bigger and stay stuck in your pipes. Over time this food will gather more bits of food and debris, restricting the flow of water and making your sink drain slower. The same is true in dishwashers, so we find it best to scrape all food off into the bin before washing up to help prevent blockages.

Follow these easy tips for drain care and you should find you are keeping your drains in better condition. However if you do find you have a problem then don’t worry as Metro Rod are fully equipped in a range of services to keep your drains running as they should be.
