Avoid Household Headaches by Fixing a Leaking Pipe

Damp/Mould can be a serious problem and can happen in any property, new or old. We’re often called out to homes across Doncaster, Barnsley, Sheffield and Rotherham to find the cause of the mould/damp is usually a leaking pipe. If you have a leaking pipe, you’ll start to notice damp patches on your external walls and on the internal walls, most commonly around your radiators. As soon as you suspect a water leak in your property, contact Metro Rod ASAP as if left untreated, it could lead to dangerous problems.

Doncaster, Barnsley, Sheffield and Rotherham leaking pipe

To try to reduce the amount of damage a leaking pipe can cause, we’ve put together a few top tips to help you:

  1. Turn off the water supply to your house using your stopcock. If you’re unsure where your stopcock is, it’s usually underneath your kitchen sink, in your hall or in the basement. If you cannot find the stopcock, check out Yorkshire Water website for more information.
  2. Avoid using any baths, showers, sinks or toilets until our engineers arrive on site as these could add further problems if you do have a leaking pipe.
  3. If there’s not a huge amount of water in your property, try to clean up as much water as you can to stop the water damaging your furniture or causing mould.
  4. If the water from the leaking pipe has gone onto electrical appliances, turn off the power for the whole house (call an electrician if you 're unsure).
  5. Once the leaking pipe has been fixed by our engineer, disinfect anything that has been in contact with the water. Also, try to air out the affected room by leaving windows open and having dehumidifiers to help dry out the space to prevent any further damp/mould.

There are other causes for damp, mould and limescale in your home such as:

  • Damage to your roof
  • Poorly sealed windows
  • Poorly ventilated rooms with washing machine, tumble dryer or drying clothes (on radiators)
  • Taking a bath/shower with no ventilation i.e. extractor fan or window open
  • Cooking

All of these factors cause extra moisture in the air which will cover the surfaces in your house (condensation) such as walls, ceilings and especially wallpaper. This extra moisture on the surfaces will create damp in your property. It’s incredibly important that you contact Metro Rod as soon as you notice any signs of a leaking pipe to prevent your home being permanently damaged.
