WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR DRAINS IN THE HEAT? – METRO ROD STOKE

As we look forward to a bit of summer sun, we need to look out for the problems the heat can cause for our drains.

Its a common misconception that drainage problems stay in winter with the cold, stormy, wet weather. Unfortunately the summer sun and heat can also cause a number of problems for our drains. Metro Rod Stoke know that the last thing you want to be worried about this summer as you try to relax is your drainage system. So we have outlined some of the common problems we see over summer so you can look out for them and hopefully prevent them occurring.

Hot and Sun Damaged Pipes

A lot of a properties outside pipes are made out of plastic, which when exposed to the sun and heat can crack and fracture. This is due to the UV rays from the sun making the plastic more brittle so that they become weaker and increase the chance of them cracking.

It’s not just the above ground pipes that can become damaged in the heat. During extreme spells of sun the ground becomes very dry and cracked which puts pressure on the pipes below, this adds pressure on them which can lead to them cracking and rupturing.

Plant Root Damage

Hot weather is also great for our gardens and plants, but as the plants grow in the sun their roots also grow down further into the ground. These roots often work their way into any existing cracks within the drainage system as they will thrive off the nutrients that flow through your pipes. As the roots grow they will make worse any small crack and also block the flow in your drains. There is not a lot you can do to prevent this from happening, but if you do have root related damage Metro Rod Stoke can find a solution for you.

Slow Draining Showers

When the sun is out there is nothing better than a nice trip to the beach. However, we often inadvertently bring home bits of the beach with us - sand, stones, pebbles etc. When we wash off the sand and any small stones and pebbles will be washed off down the drain which can to blockages and slow draining showers. It would be good to invest in a drain cover which can catch this material for you and help prevent blocked shower drains.
