Investing in Staff [Building a Strong Workforce]

'Investors in People'

Training underpins our ability to function in the most professional way.

Accredited with the title 'Investors in People' Metro Rod have a genuine commitment from their leaders and passionate employees. In other words, everyone is focused on the ambitions of the organisation. Therefore, we believe in on-going training and development of all our staff. An excellent, and professional workforce that is ‘fit for purpose’ at all times is provided on every job.

Consequently, our experience working for large clients has been important in defining and driving the standards that Metro Rod work towards.  However, despite there being no national governing body or minimum statutory standard with regards to drainage engineer training, we have implemented our own standards. These standards are aligned to those of water utility clients, OFWAT and SIM scoring requirements. As a result, we believe our standards are among the highest in the drainage industry, and our continued commitment to ongoing training reflects this.

Our Engineers Qualifications

In-depth health and safety training modules must be taken by all of our engineers. Similarly, engineers endure job-specific training which is relevant to the work they perform. In addition, engineers receive behavioural training in:

  • Code of Conduct
  • Cultural Awareness
  • Equality and Diversity
  • Lone Working
  • Safeguarding
  • Dealing with aggressive behaviors.

In short, the minimum standards for our engineers would be for instance:

  • High-Pressure Water Jetting Trained
  • Confined Space Entry
  • Street Works - For example, signing, lighting and guarding (NRSWA)
  • CSCS (construction skills certification scheme)
  • Asbestos Awareness
  • Manual Handling
  • ADUS cable avoidance in line with HSG47 (in other words, avoiding dangerous underground situations)
  • Safe Excavation Training (up to 2m deep)

When a Metro Rod engineer turns up at the job site he will be carrying photographic ID and wearing branded clothing and Personal Protective Equipment. Likewise, our engineer will have undergone all of the necessary training to ensure he is fully prepared to carry out the task in hand.
