A drain thats blocked with fat can lead to overflowing water and unpleasant smells that you’ll want to put an end to ASAP.

Fatberg 1 V2 1080x675

It is not uncommon to find drains that are blocked from the cooking fats that are poured down the sink. The hot, liquid fat will cool over time which can result in severe issues, including internal or external flooding and damage to pipes and sewage systems. The mass of solid fat which builds up over time are called fatbergs, and can become huge if they are left for too long.

There are numerous ways you can unblock an outside drain of its fatberg, but if it becomes to tricky then you don’t need to worry as Metro Rod Bristol are available 24/7. As experts in all things relating to unblocking a drain, we would recommend always calling us out, but if you want to tackle it yourself here are your best options for the job.

  1. Boiling water

Boiling water is a great first option to try, the heat of the boiling water should help soften and melt the fatberg. This is a good first step, as it allows you to determine whether there is a blockage within the internal pipes of the sink too. Simply boil a kettle and pour it down the drain and sink then wait and see whether your water is flowing better.

  1. Drain Cleaners

Drain cleaners and unblockers are available from most supermarkets and online, containing various chemicals which can work well to shift nasty blockages. Just make sure you read and follow the instructions on the packaging to ensure you see the best results.

  1. A Drain Rod

The next step you can try is using a drain rod to physically break up the fatberg so it can be washed out. The first thing to do is find the drain cover and insert the rod, whilst unwinding the drain snake. After this remove the rod and test whether the drain flows better.

  1. Call the Professionals

If all these methods fail you, then you will need to call out a professional which is where Metro Rod Bristol come in. We offer a few different options to help break up fatbergs and unblock drains, so after one of the engineers have inspected the problem they will choose and carry out the job to get your drains flowing again.
