How not to get blocked!
Have you ever said “As long as its liquid just put it down the sink!” or how about “Once its flushed or rinsed its gone, right?”
Sound familiar? We often don’t realise the potential damage we are doing when we rinse certain items down our sinks, baths, showers and what we flush down the toilet.
An increasingly common cause of blocked drains and sewer pipes is grease. Fats, oils and grease solidify in the pipes causing blockages in sinks, blocked toilets and later down in the water treatment system. This can result in raw sewage overflowing in your home or your neighbour’s home. Much of this can begin in the kitchen sink. There are a few hints and tips below to help you avoid getting blocked sinks and toilets.
What should you avoid?
Avoid putting down the sink:
- Meat Fat
- Food scraps
- Dairy products
- Coffee grinds
- Egg shells
- Motor Oil
- Solvents such as nail polish remover, turpentine
Experts have found many of our streams and rivers now contain 10 or more harsh chemicals and many personal care products are to blame having a huge effect on aquatic life. Don’t flush unwanted prescriptions or personal care items, more than a drain blockage problem, they have such a damaging effect on the environment and animals.
However, items such as wipes cause a build up and result in blocked drains and blocked toilets assisting in the creation of huge “Fatbergs”
Avoid putting down the toilet:
- Cotton buds
- Sanitary items
