Here at Metro Rod, one of our most common jobs which we attend is toilet unblocking. The reason we have to attend so many toilet unblocking jobs in the Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield area is due to people (both domestic and commercial) flushing items down the toilet and sink which should be put in the bin. When our plumbers and engineers have discussed the issue with tenants/owners about toilet unblocking, they’ve genuinely thought it’s acceptable to put anything down the toilet which will ‘fit’ such as small waste items but they don’t understand the long-term effects it can have on our drains.
There’s a clear pattern forming whilst we’re attending toilet unblocking jobs in Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham as it’s always the same items being incorrectly flushed down the toilet. Wet Wipes, Sanitary Items and Paper Towels are all common causes for the toilet unblocking jobs we attend. All of the items mentioned are specifically designed to absorb water/dirt, not break it down, so it’s important that these items are put into the bin rather than down the toilet. These items will cause blockages instantly or gradually over time and could cause permanent damage to your pipework (which can be expensive to repair).
Over the past two weeks, we have monitored the causes for the toilet unblocking jobs we have attended and the results are:
Wet Wipes – 24%
Paper Towels – 20%
Limescale – 12%
Sanitary Items – 11%
Unknown (item flushed into main drains) – 11%
Rubbish – 9%
Fat/Grease/Food – 7%
Roots – 3%
Cleaning Products – 2%
Toy – 1%
As you can clearly see from the figures above, a large proportion of the items are paper towels and wet wipes which are usually advertised as ‘Flushable’ but they’re not! 44% of our toilet unblocking jobs were caused by Wet Wipes and Paper Towels and the majority had ‘Flushable’ printed on the packaging! Please also bare in mind, tenants and owners often try toilet unblocking themselves but it can often cause further issue as they can damage the pipes by using incorrect equipment. If you notice a blockage, call us right away on 0808 208 2655 and leave the toilet unblocking to our expert engineers.
We use the toilet approximately 2,500 times per year so it’s very important that we don’t take advantage and try to avoid toilet unblocking situations. Here are 5 top tips to avoid toilet unblocking situations:
- Reduce the amount of toilet paper you use
- Keep the area around the toilet clear (so nothing could accidentally fall in)
- Clean the toilets regularly with appropriate toilet cleaner
- Do NOT flush anything other than the 3 P’s (Pee, Poop and Paper)
- Make sure your children are aware of the 3 P’s
