How Grease Trap Cleaning and the Picote System Restored Full Drainage Flow
A commercial property in Dorset was experiencing ongoing drainage issues caused by heavy accumulations of fats, oils and grease within its kitchen waste system. Initial investigations revealed restricted flow, an ageing grease trap manhole and poor access for future maintenance. While immediate cleaning works improved conditions, it was clear that more extensive remedial works were required to resolve the underlying issues. To provide a long-term solution, Metro Rod Dorset & Portsmouth carried out a programme of grease trap cleaning, infrastructure upgrades and specialist pipe cleaning using a Picote system to restore performance and improve the reliability of the drainage network for a Dorset-based business.
The Challenge: Grease Trap Cleaning Required to Address Recurring Blockages in the Dorset Area
Metro Rod Dorset and Portsmouth engineers initially attended the site to investigate reports of drainage issues affecting the property’s kitchen waste system. Surface drainage assets, including manholes, gullies and ACO channels, were cleaned and cleared, restoring flow in several areas. However, further investigations revealed a separate foul manhole serving the kitchen that contained significant quantities of fat and grease.
The inspection also identified that the existing grease trap manhole was no longer fit for purpose and required replacement. With grease deposits restricting flow throughout sections of the drainage network, the site faced an increased risk of recurring blockages and disruption to day-to-day operations. Comprehensive grease trap cleaning, drainage improvements and specialist pipe cleaning were required to deliver a lasting solution for the Dorset commercial premises.
The Solution: Grease Trap Cleaning and Picote System Technology
To address the root cause of the problem, our team returned to the site in rural Dorset to carry out a complete programme of drainage improvement works. The project combined grease trap cleaning, civil engineering works and the use of a Picote system, a specialist mechanical pipe-cleaning technology designed to clean and restore drainage systems from within.
The works included:
- Completing grease trap emptying to safely remove waste and prepare the system for refurbishment works
- Excavating and removing the existing grease trap manhole
- Installing a new grease trap manhole to improve the effectiveness and reliability of the system
- Constructing a new upstream manhole chamber to improve access for future inspections and maintenance
- Using a Picote system, both upstream and downstream of the grease trap, to mechanically clean the inside of the pipework
- Removing accumulated fats, oils, grease and debris that were restricting flow within the drainage network
- Installing new pipework and associated materials to support the upgraded infrastructure
- Surrounding the new grease trap installation with concrete to provide long-term structural protection
- Backfilling and fully reinstating the excavation area following completion of the works
By deploying a Picote system both upstream and downstream of the grease trap, Metro Rod Dorset and Portsmouth engineers were able to remove stubborn grease build-up and restore full flow throughout the drainage network without the need for more extensive pipe replacement works.
