Meet Liam – Our First Apprentice

Meet Liam!

We’re delighted to introduce Liam, aged 16, who has joined Metro Rod Lancashire as our new Drainage Apprentice!

Liam has taken the first step towards what we hope will be a long and rewarding career in the drainage industry, combining his apprenticeship training with hands-on experience alongside our team of experienced engineers.

Over the coming years, he’ll have the opportunity to get involved in a huge variety of work, from drain cleaning and CCTV surveys to repairs, tanker work and learning how to use the specialist equipment that keeps our engineers moving.

It’s a really exciting opportunity for Liam — and one we’re incredibly proud to be supporting.

This is also a really exciting opportunity for us at Metro Rod.

While preparing for our interview for the Trade Business of the Year category at the 2024 Wigan Business Awards, we spoke to the judging panel about our plans for the future of Metro Rod Lancashire.

One of our ambitions was to grow the business to a position where we could take on apprentices and give young people the opportunity to build a career within the drainage industry.

At the time, it was a goal for the future.

Fast forward two years, and we were delighted to see that ambition become a reality.

A few words from our director!

I’m really pleased to welcome Liam, aged 16, as our new Drainage Apprentice at Metro Rod Lancashire.

This is something I’m particularly excited about because apprenticeships within the drainage industry have historically been quite rare. Unlike many traditional trades, there hasn’t always been a clearly recognised route for a young person to leave school, gain formal qualifications and build a long-term career specifically within drainage.

We want to help change that.

Working alongside Watertrain, who will be delivering the formal apprenticeship programme, Liam will combine structured learning with genuine hands-on experience alongside our experienced engineers at Metro Rod Lancashire.

At just 16, he’ll have the opportunity to learn the industry from the ground up — developing practical drainage skills, understanding the technology and equipment we use, learning about health & safety and customer service, and gaining experience across the wide variety of work we undertake every day.

For us, though, this is about much more than training an apprentice.

The drainage industry needs to continue attracting young people and showing them that this can be a skilled, professional and rewarding long-term career. As a business, we have a responsibility to invest in the next generation rather than simply waiting for experienced engineers to become available.

If we want skilled drainage engineers in five or ten years’ time, we need to start developing them today.

We’re really looking forward to seeing Liam develop, learn and progress over the coming years, and we’re delighted to be able to give a young person the opportunity to begin building a career in our industry from the age of 16.

Welcome to the team, Liam. You’ve got a lot to learn, but you’ve also got a fantastic opportunity ahead of you — and we’re delighted to be part of that journey.

Welcome to the team, Liam! ?

From everyone at Metro Rod Lancashire, a huge welcome to the team!

We’re all really excited to see Liam get started and begin learning the ropes. He’s got plenty to learn, but he’s also got a fantastic team around him who can share their knowledge, experience and — no doubt — a few stories from life on the road!

We hope his apprenticeship gives him the skills, confidence and experience to build a career he can be proud of.

Good luck, Liam — we’re looking forward to seeing where the next few years take you! ??
