As the property owner it is your responsibility to be compliant on or before 1 January 2020 or you could be subject to fines or prosecution for non-compliance. Given that the contents of a Septic tank could easily contaminate the environment, its understandable why the Environment Agency would want to make sure the contents stays in the tank, instead of floating down the local water supply. This is why there are many rules and regulations surrounding septic tanks – from where you can put them, to where the water that leaves the tank can go. Some are best practice guidelines, but others are legislation, and you could face a hefty fine or prosecution should you ignore them.
The General Binding Rules for septic tanks or small sewage treatment plants came into effect on 1 January 2015. These new rules will force some property owners to upgrade their septic tanks in order to reduce the levels of pollution in the nation’s watercourses.
If your septic tank is located closer than 10 meters to; or discharges directly into a watercourse, river, stream etc. it will need to be upgraded. This is to ensure the ‘quality’ of the waste water is considered clean enough to flow straight into local watercourses without causing pollution.
